American GI Forum hosts Special Presentaion on Veterans' Employment Issues August 5,2009

Angel Escobar, City Manager of Corpus Christi with City of Austin Veterans’ Consultant Allen Bergeron and former Austin City Manager Toby Futrell, Texas Veterans Leadership Program Regional Directors Bob Gear and Gabriel Lopez, and Texas ESGR Committee Executive Director Dwain James met with the American GI Forum’s leaders today, helping kick off the Forum’s 61st Annual Conference with a special presentation on their organization’s programs and services implemented to assist veterans in obtaining employment and resolving workplace issues related to military service. Austin’s veteran preference hiring initiative and the Texas Veterans Leadership Program are models for both the private and public sector to effectively assist veterans’ transition from military status to the civilian workforce; and, ESGR has a successful history of gaining employers’ support for managing veterans and reservists through its outreach programs and consultation services.
